May 2011 ProSync Career Events

Apr 02

ProSync had a little fun with employees this April Fools Day 2011 by temporarily changing the company name from “ProSync” to “ProSheep.”

Mike Lessing, CEO sent out a fake e-mail announcement explaining that a re-branding was due and that he’d like the company to be viewed in a softer, rounder light when it came to defense.  He announced that the new name for ProSync, effective immediately, would be “ProSheep.”  The company’s motto was also changed from “Defense Done Right” to “Defense Done Softly.”  The prank was accompanied by an updated mock site with the new logo to reflect the announced changes.

After a couple hours of confusion and laughs, the mock site, which was only viewable on the company’s internal network (for obvious reasons), was turned off after the entertainment value of the joke ran its course.

Tips & Tricks

VMWARE vCenter SQL Server backend

VMWare vCenter can use multiple types of databases for it’s backend, one of these is Microsoft SQL Server Express. This is a popular choice but is intended for small deployments of up to 5 hosts and/or 50 VM’s.

Something to watch out for is that over time this database can fill up with historical performance data and MS SQL Express has a hard limit of 4096MB (4GB) per database.

If you hit this limit vCenter will stop working completely and you will be forced to either move the databases for vCenter over to a different SQL server that does not have that limit or reduce the size of the database.

The easier and quicker of the two options is to reduce the size of the database.

Luckily vmware has created a SQL script to help with this. Make sure you pay attention to the version of vCenter you have and use the proper instructions and SQL script for that version.  Here’s a video from VMWare on how to do it:

How to purge old data from the database used by VMware vCenter Server

Of course if your environment has out-grown or will out-grow MS SQL Express it is a good idea to upgrade the SQL Database server backend to better handle this and prevent this sort of thing in the future.

Another thing you can do is customizing the statistical data collection settings.

From vCenter; click on “Administration”, “VirtualCenter Management Server Configuration”, and select “Statistics”.

To give you an idea of the amount of space this can take up in the database

“Using default settings, the statistical data for 75 hosts running 8-16 VMs per host will plateau around 90-150 MB in a year (200-330 MB if set to “full”). Each month, the average number of events generated will also consume about 190 MB in SQL, and 70 MB in Oracle. Total DB size after a year is expected to be around 2.40 Gb in SQL, and 1.2 Gb in Oracle. “ *data taken from vmware communities post.

Question: What does the ProSync Adaptive Engineering Group (AEG) do?  What’s one of your new products?

Answer:  The Adaptive Engineering Group, AEG, is a product and solution provider focused on supplying high-end telemetry ground support equipment for the military and civil space communities.  Telemetry data, defined as the transmission and measurement of data from a remote location via wire or radio or other means, can originate from a variety of sources such as a rocket, satellite, or a ballistic missile.  The information can consist of sensor data, satellite image data, or ballistic missile trajectory information to name a few.  Our products consist of tracking receivers, modulators, bit synchronizers and front-end processing equipment which support satellite and sub-orbital launch vehicle RF(radio frequency) communication links.
The Modulator takes in digital data, encodes the data and places it on an RF carrier signal which is then transmitted up to a satellite/launch vehicle for commanding.  The Receiver, with the aid of a tracking antenna, locks on to an RF satellite signal and tracks the signal during its pass before disappearing over the horizon.  The Bit Synchronizer takes the raw data the receiver recovers, locks onto the data, generates a clock and outputs synchronous clock and data in digital form to the Front-End Processor.  The Front-End Processor then takes that digital data, decodes it, processes the data according to a protocol specified by the customer, and distributes the data to the end user.

The new ProSync Telemetry System (PTS-1000), which we recently showcased at the International Telemetry Conference (ITC-2010), currently integrates three of these four components (Receiver, Modulator, and BitSync) into a Compact PCI form factor allowing it to be rack mounted or easily transportable.  The system is capable of handling data transfer rates of up to 1Gbps.  The system was designed to support the current missions, up to 150Mbps, as well as future missions with higher data rates.  The Modulator can synthesize virtually any standard or custom modulation scheme the user desires with minimal effort and no hardware re-design due to its reconfigurable nature.  This makes it appealing to the Telemetry community designing the next generation modulation schemes and launch vehicles.
AEG is also looking at ways to expand its offerings into different sectors of the Telemetry community by providing equipment such as high efficiency RF power amplifiers, which will enable the community to achieve higher data rates, and integrating the Front-End Processing into the same unit.  These offerings will help propel the Satellite and launch vehicle communities into the next generation data rates.

Question:  What are the ProSync Analyst Services that ProSync offers?

Answer:  ProSync Analyst Services are a division of ProSync that offer technical analysis of various communication sources.  The primary purpose of this department at ProSync is to offer intelligence services that meet mission needs quickly and accurately. There are four primary types of Analysts at ProSync:

CNO Intelligence Analyst: Evaluate and analyze complex data and telecommunications networks. Perform all-source intelligence analysis of cyber activities for the purpose of identifying entities of interest. Conduct target characterization to determine strengths, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities of targeted entities. Provide technical intelligence reports for tactical, combat, and strategic purposes.

Signals Analyst:Performs pinpoint analysis on foreign communications and non-communications devices. Establish target identification and operational patterns. Provide technical intelligence reports for tactical, combat, and strategic purposes. Maintain analytical databases and working aids for target characterization.

Geospatial Metadata Analyst: Combine intelligence to create map visualizations of target for tactical support. Provide timely and accurate reports to decision makers.  Identify intelligence gaps to ensure the most comprehensive intelligence collection

All-Source Intelligence Analyst:Analyze, process, and disseminate strategic and tactical intelligence. Support the combatant commander by providing all-source intelligence products. Acquire and analyze incoming intelligence reports. Create and maintain cross-reference intelligence records.
